IDC_Logo-squareEven though Samsung announced that it didn't have very pleasing smartphone sales last quarter, it actually managed to hold onto the top spot in terms of handsets sold. Although its share of the world market fell from 32,3% to 25,2% compared to last year, it continues to maintain its dominant position with 74,3 million smartphones sold in the entire second quarter of 2014. The company thus overtook its competitor Apple by more than half. The latter sold 35,1 million phones in the same period and thus gained a market share of 11,9%.

In this regard, Apple's market share also decreased compared to last year, but unlike Samsung, the number of phones sold in its case increased by almost 4 million. Samsung, on the other hand, recorded a drop in the number of smartphones sold by 3 million units. The decline was mainly caused by Chinese phone manufacturers, who sell phones at a very low price, which understandably wins over more and more consumers. However, Samsung wants to try to rectify the situation this quarter by releasing two key devices, specifically Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which will be introduced in the next month.
