All of this year's Samsung UHD TV models have met the strict criteria for Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV certification by Digital Europe (DE), an independent European association of IT and consumer electronics manufacturers. With 62 companies and 37 national trade associations as members, Digital Europe is one of the most influential organizations representing the digital technology industry in Europe.

The SUHD TV 2016 series and the UHD TV model series 6 achieve the strict standards for UHD TV certification as specified by the DE association. These TVs will be marked with both the European UHD TV logo and the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) logo. Both certificates will already be presented on UHD TV models at this year's IFA fair in Berlin.

As part of the certification, DE defined "pixel" as the smallest image resolution element capable of providing the same level of brightness as the entire display. The horizontal and vertical pixel counts must contain a complete block of red, green, and blue subpixels, while the presence of subpixels of other colors is excluded.

Additional criteria for obtaining a DE certificate:

  • The minimum native display resolution (e.g. LCD, PDP, OLED) is 3840 x 2160 at 16:9 aspect ratio;
  • The minimum supported color distance (colorimetric) is BT.709 or higher;
  • The appliance offers the user at least one signal transmission channel that does not reduce the frame rate or resolution of the content received from the source via the UHD interface;
  • The appliance offers the user at least one signal transmission channel that does not reduce the resolution or frame rate of the UHD input during processing before display.

"Our TVs will provide consumers with an important reference guide for choosing a UHD TV that delivers premium picture quality, even if the customer is not familiar with the technology terminology and all the features in detail," said Simon Sung, Senior Vice President of Samsung's Visual Display Business Electronics.

"We believe that this new certification from Digital Europe, confirmed by the use of the UHD logo, will give consumers the confidence they need when purchasing a UHD TV."

Samsung will gradually introduce a new information campaign that will deal with the topic of UHD TV picture quality with the aim of helping consumers to be as informed as possible when purchasing a UHD TV. The new campaign will also draw attention to the use of RGB panels with the effect of reducing distortion and introduce users to related UHD technologies.
