Samsung has been working on several prototype smartphones with flexible and foldable displays for some time now. The company has even filed several patents related to such a device.
A patent application that was filed with the US PTO marks, was filed on Jun. 9, 2015 under US No. 9557771 B2. Here is a detailed description of how such a device, with a foldable display and supported by mechanical joints in the middle, could actually look like. According to the patent, it is clear that Samsung plans to produce such a flexible display panel that would fold inside the device.
However, Samsung and even LG have been working on smartphones, tablets and hybrid devices with foldable displays for several years. However, it seems that the South Korean manufacturer is several steps ahead of its competition, as the arrival of one such phone is expected as early as the third quarter of 2017.
