Samsung showed off its flagship models at a press conference early this evening Galaxy S8 to Galaxy S8+. However, no big surprises awaited us, we already knew everything from the leaks, of which there were more than enough in recent weeks. However Samsung Galaxy S8 to Galaxy The S8+ is officially here, so it would be a sin not to summarize everything that the South Koreans showed off today.

Design

The entire phone is dominated by a huge display, which Samsung describes as "infinite", and it really feels like it. In the case of the smaller model, it has a diagonal of 5,8 inches and Galaxy S8+ even 6,2 inches. Both models have the same resolution – 2 × 960 pixels in an unconventional aspect ratio of 1:440. The top and bottom bezels are really minimal. Thanks to this, the phone looks slightly different than most of today's smartphones, and it is more than clear that other manufacturers will be moving in the same direction.

The absence of a home button also had a big impact on the design change. It is now software and is supplemented by two others, which were in capacitive form in the previous model. All are now displayed on a 400px wide strip that works independently of the display and uses Snap Window mode. When playing a video, the buttons sometimes don't appear at all, but they always respond to touch. In addition, Samsung said that the buttons are sensitive to the force of the press - if you press more, a different action will be performed.

As expected, the fingerprint reader has moved to the back of the phone next to the camera. But the good news is that the new one is noticeably faster. However, it will be possible to use the iris reader, which is located on the front side in the upper frame next to the front camera and other sensors, to authenticate the user.

Camera and sound

The camera has also received an improvement, albeit only a minor one. Like last year's model, i Galaxy The S8 (and S8+) offers a 12-megapixel camera with a Dual Pixel PDAF sensor and f1,7 aperture. But what is new is the so-called post-processing multi-frame, when with each press of the shutter release, a total of three pictures are taken. The software selects the best of them and selects additional data from the remaining two to further improve the selected one.

Despite the speculation, we did not get stereo sound. Both models still only have one speaker. But you will now find AKG headphones in the package (you can view them <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1932/8043/files/200721_ODSTOUPENI_BEZ_UDANI_DUVODU__EN.pdf?v=1595428404" data-gt-href-en="https://en.notsofunnyany.com/">here</a>) and the 3,5mm jack, which is disappearing from the competition, was also retained. Samsung's new flagship boasts a USB-C port for fast charging.

Hardware equipment

The European models will be powered by a Samsung Exynos 8895 processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 in the US models), followed by 4GB of RAM. The processor is made with 10nm technology, so it is noticeably ahead of the competition. The storage size is then the expected 64GB, and of course there is support for microSD cards of up to 256GB.

Software

It is already pre-installed Android 7.0 Nougat. But the superstructure is now called Samsung Experience 8. But this is only a name change, the system is similar to TouchWiz on Galaxy S7, so again the white color dominates, but it is not exactly the most suitable for AMOLED displays.

One of the biggest software innovations is the new virtual assistant Bixby. It even got a special button on the left side of the phone (just below the volume buttons) Samsung introduced Bixby about a week ago, so you can read more about it <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1932/8043/files/200721_ODSTOUPENI_BEZ_UDANI_DUVODU__EN.pdf?v=1595428404" data-gt-href-en="https://en.notsofunnyany.com/">here</a> a <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1932/8043/files/200721_ODSTOUPENI_BEZ_UDANI_DUVODU__EN.pdf?v=1595428404" data-gt-href-en="https://en.notsofunnyany.com/">here</a>. But Bixby still has a lot of work to do before it is truly perfect and present in all major applications.

DeX

Abbreviation for Desktop eXperience and, as you may have already guessed, this is support for a special dock from Samsung (sold separately), which turns the phone into a desktop computer (all you need is a keyboard, mouse and monitor). DeX is one of the biggest novelties of this year's model, which is why we dedicate a separate article to it.
