Intel has held its position as the largest chipmaker for 24 years, which is certainly a respectable time, but it's time for a new king – Samsung wants to dethrone Intel. According to the forecast, this year, Samsung is to become the largest chip manufacturer in the world, replacing Intel after 24 years.

Intel has been the largest chip manufacturer since 1993 when it released the legendary Pentium processors to the world. However, Samsung's growth is impressive and Intel is catching up at a rapid pace.

If the memory market continues to behave much like this, Samsung should take the top spot as the largest chip maker during the second quarter, dethroning Intel, which has held that position since 1993, predicts Bill McClean, president of the research firm market IC Insights.

Intel is expected to earn around $14,4 billion in the second quarter of this year, while Samsung is expected to earn $0,2 billion more – up 4,1% year-on-year.

If this really happens, it will be a huge success for Samsung. Intel has not had any significant opponent in the processor field until now, but that will change this year.
