Samsung rules with its smartphones not only globally, but also in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. According to the latest data IDC (International Data Corporation) last year, the South Korean giant took approximately 30% of the market share of the import volume, in both countries.

After Samsung, Huawei and Lenovo competed for second place on the Czech and Slovak markets. While Lenovo finished third in the Czech Republic, it rose to second place in Slovakia. The fourth place is steadily held by the American in both countries Apple with their iPhones.

Other brands

The aforementioned quartet of manufacturers took the majority of sales in both markets. Other brands such as Microsoft, Sony, HTC, LG and Alcatel have become more marginal players, each taking less than 3% of the big pie. Together with other brands such as the Chinese Xiaomi, Zopo or Coolpad, they sold together only about 20% of smartphones imported in the Czech Republic, while in Slovakia it was even less.

The phone market in the Czech Republic and Slovakia is growing

However, the figures summarizing the smartphone market in our region are also interesting. In Slovakia, demand grew by 2015% year-on-year between the calendar year 1016 and 10, in the Czech Republic it was 2,4% over the same period. A total of 1,3 million smartphones were sold in Slovakia last year, while in the Czech Republic it was 2,7 million units. The strongest sales were of course the last quarter of the year before Christmas, when the market in Slovakia grew by 61,6% compared to the previous quarter.

"The Czech market is generally more demanding for sellers to build and defend their positions, as mobile operators in the Czech Republic hold only about 40% of the market, compared to approximately 70% in Slovakia," says IDC analyst Ina Malatinská.

Interest in phones with LTE support is also growing, as phones supporting this standard accounted for approximately 80% of total sales. The great demand for LTE phones was also reflected in their price, which dropped by 7,9% year-on-year in the Czech Republic and by 11,6% in Slovakia.
