Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. together with 30 partners, held this year's Tizen Developer Conference (TDC) 2017 at the Hilton Union Square Hotel in San Francisco, which took place on May 16-17, 2017. In addition to software developers, the conference was attended by more than a thousand service providers and content, device manufacturers and other Tizen ecosystem partners.

The main motto of the TDC 2017 conference is "Ready To Connect, Get Involved!" - "We are ready to connect, get involved!", a vision for the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) was presented here, which offered participants more opportunities to use the key features of the platform Tizen 4.0, various technologies and products, and the evolving development environment required for user experience (UX) and product and application development.

As an annual professional conference for global developers, TDC is the place to showcase new Tizen technologies and products. It was first held in San Francisco in 2012 when the open source Tizen 1.0 platform was launched. Since then, over the past five years, Tizen OS has evolved into Tizen 4.0, which supports a wide range of Tizen devices.

“Since its launch, Tizen has become the operating system for almost all Samsung products, experiencing record sales growth and becoming the world's most successful Linux-based embedded OS. With open collaboration and the advent of the Internet of Things era, we expect Tizen to usher in new opportunities for the future of the Internet of Things,” said Won Jin Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business and Chairman of the Tizen Technical Steering Group.

Expanding the Tizen device ecosystem with the Tizen 4.0 platform

The main changes in the Tizen 4.0 platform include optimizations for Internet of Things developers, which will allow them to quickly create and commercially launch various applications. While the use of the existing Tizen platform was limited to devices such as televisions and smartphones, Tizen 4.0 will provide a development environment that can be customized according to the characteristics of a variety of devices by dividing it into functional modules. In addition, the Tizen 4.0 platform has been extended to Tizen RT (Real-Time) to include not only mature products like TVs and mobile devices, but also products at the opposite end of the spectrum, including thermostats, scales, light bulbs and more.

Tizen Developer Conference 2017

Thanks to the collaboration of the Tizen project with Microsoft, developers can now more easily create Tizen applications using popular programming languages. In particular, Microsoft .NET and Xamarin UI have been included in the Tizen platform, so it is possible to develop applications written in C# in Visual Studio, which will lead to increased productivity.

In order to expand the ecosystem of devices based on the Tizen IoT platform, Samsung plans to strengthen its cooperation with chip manufacturers such as Samsung ARTIK and BroadLink in China, with home appliance maker Commax in Korea and service provider Glympse in the US.

New Tizen Services and Products: ARTIK™053 Module and Samsung Z4 Smartphone

At the TDC 2017 conference, Samsung presented the new ARTIK module053 lightweight IoT chipset with integrated real-time processing, using the Tizen RT platform for the first time. ARTIK module 053 is an affordable IoT solution with high performance and enhanced security for next-generation products such as connected home appliances, building products, healthcare equipment and industrial automation. Thanks to the ARM® Cortex® R4 processor core with a frequency of 320 MHz, 1,4 MB of RAM, 8 MB of flash disk and a certified radio via Wi-Fi, it significantly reduces development time.

As part of the presentation of the ARTIK module053 there was also a hands-on workshop "IoT Hands-On Lab session" focused on IoT software development on a new module using Tizen Studio for RT, an application development environment based on a lightweight real-time operating system (RTOS).

The Samsung Z4 smartphone was also introduced at the conference. The Z4 smartphone is equipped with a front and rear camera optimized for social networks and a wide range of features focused on convenience and productivity, including quick and easy access to the most frequently used functions.
