As in previous years, technology companies have received thousands of patents this year as well. Thanks to a new overview from Quartz Media LLC we can view the list of companies that have registered the most.
As it has been for the past 25 years, IBM is number one with 5 registered patents. However, the South Korean giant is breathing down its back with 797 patents, followed by Intel in third place with 4 patents. Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Facebook. Where every company with the exception of Facebook has received over a thousand patents.

A similar ranking also applies to statistics from 2010. IBM and Samsung still hold their dominant position. This time, however, Intel was placed only in 4th place, and the bronze position was taken by Microsoft. Also worth mentioning is Google with 14 patents and Apple with 13 patents.
According to the survey, IBM registers an average of 27 patents per day and owns 2% of all registered patents in the US. This year, IBM registered 3% more patents compared to the previous year.
More than once we could hear about a leaked patent that described a very clever feature. Most of the registered patents, however, will not be used by companies in the near future. They register everything they can think of, just as a protection against competition.
