Throughout last year, it was often speculated that either Samsung or its main competitor Apple will introduce a smartphone with a fingerprint reader in the display. Although both companies actually worked on the technology, in the end neither of them managed to integrate the sensor into the display. Suddenly, out of the blue emerged China's Vivo has hinted that it will introduce the first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint reader. Finally, it actually happened and Vivo brought its almost finished phone to CES 2018.

Editors of foreign magazines could also test the phone, including Vlad Savov from The Verge. He also recorded his first experience with the phone, namely with the fingerprint reader in the display, in the form of a video, which you can watch below. In it, the editor states that the reader works without any problems and looks futuristic. Her only drawback is speed. Capacitive sensors in today's phones are really lightning fast, so the sensor in Vivo's smartphone can feel like a step back in terms of responsiveness. However, it compensates for the fact that the sensor is located on the display, which brings countless advantages.

Vivo used new technology from Synpatics for its reader. Specifically, it is an optical sensor that is able to scan a fingerprint even through glass or display. Samsung also worked with Synaptics on this technology in the past, but ultimately failed to get the in-display reader to a stage where it could be used by end users. However, during that time, Synpatics has moved its Clear ID, as it calls the technology, a little further, so it is expected that other companies will integrate it into their flagship models this year, including Samsung.
