Currently, JPEG is the standard format used for digital photo compression. However, the group behind JPEG will soon release a completely new format called JPEG XS, which is not intended to replace the original JPEG. Essentially, the two formats will co-exist, as JPEG XS was created specifically for streaming video and VR, as opposed to JPEG, which helps digital images.

Join Photographic Experts Group last week announced, that the JPEG XS format is characterized by low latency, so you won't get hurt. A lot of users complained that they felt sick when wearing a VR headset, and to avoid this, the time transferred to the VR and to the head must be as short as possible. In addition to low response, JPEG XS prides itself on low power consumption.

At the same time, compression is easier and faster, which leads to better quality images. The compressed files are larger than the JPEG files as a result, but this is not such a problem, since the files are designed to be streamed, not stored on the smartphone's storage.

For example, JPEG will reduce the size of the image by a factor of 10, while JPEG XS by a factor of 6. It should also be noted that JPEG XS is open source and due to its speed, it will be used mainly in situations where it is necessary to get the image to the CPU of the device. An example is an autonomous vehicle.
