Samsung hasn't revealed any yet informace about the upcoming Gear VR device, which should have its own built-in display. So it would mean that you would no longer have to use the smartphone display to display the content.

The South Korean giant has been so active that it has already created AMOLED displays for virtual reality. So last week at SID 2018, it introduced a 2,43-inch virtual reality display with a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels and a pixel density of 1 PPI.

Samsung unveiled three different displays at the trade show. Another was a 3,5-inch display with a resolution of 1440 × 1600 pixels and a pixel density of 616 PPI. The last was a 3,2-inch display with a resolution of 1824 × 1824 pixels with a pixel density of 806 PPI. Samsung may be working on several VR headset models at different price points. Of course, that's just speculation.

The company strives to constantly improve its products, including those that extend into the field of virtual reality. Samsung achieved a pixel density of 1 PPI by reducing the size of the display but increasing the resolution.
