Samsung NEXT, the venture capital division that focuses on investing in software and services complemented by Samsung hardware, has announced the formation of the Q Fund. Through the fund, the South Korean giant would invest in AI startups.

According to a press release, the Q Fund will invest in areas such as simulation learning, scene understanding, intuitive physics, programmatic learning programs, robot control, human-computer interaction and meta learning. The fund is focused on unconventional approaches to AI problems that are immune to traditional methods. The fund recently invested in Covariant.AI, which uses new approaches to help robots learn new and complex skills.

The Samsung NEXT team will work with many leading researchers in the field to identify the right opportunities for the Q Fund. As the fund is focused on other futuristic and complex AI challenges, revenue is not a top priority.

“Over the past ten years, we've watched software contribute to the world. Now it's AI software's turn. We are launching the Q Fund to support the next generation of AI startups that want to go beyond what we know today.” said Vincent Tang of Samsung NEXT Division.
