Do you want to treat your computer to high-quality musical accompaniment, which would also make your work desk special? Are you looking for speakers that stand out from the norm both in terms of sound and design? If you answered yes to these questions, read on. In today's test, we will take a look at the speaker system of the famous KEF brand, which will definitely impress every lover of great sound.

The KEF company comes from England and has been in the audio business for over 50 years. In that time they have built a very respectable name in the industry and their products are usually synonymous with superior sound quality and superior performance across the entire product spectrum. In today's test, we look at the KEF EGG, which is a (wireless) 2.0 stereo system that can have a surprisingly wide range of uses.

As already stated above, it is a 2.0 system, i.e. two stereo speakers that can be used both in wireless (Bluetooth 4.0, aptX codec support) and in classic wired mode by connecting via the supplied Mini USB or Mini TOSLINK (combined with 3,5 .19 mm jack). The speakers are offered by a unique compound Uni-Q driver, which combines one 115 millimeter tweeter for high frequencies and a 94 millimeter driver for midrange and bass with support of up to 24 kHz/50 bit (depending on the source). Total output power is 95 W, maximum output SPL XNUMX dB. Everything is installed in a sound box with a front bass reflex.

In addition to the aforementioned connectivity, it is possible to connect an external subwoofer to the system using a dedicated 3,5 millimeter connector. The second audio/optical connector is located on the left side of the right (the one with the controls) speaker. On the base of the right speaker we also find four basic control buttons for on/off, adjusting the volume and changing the sound source. The speaker can also be controlled via the included remote control. Its functionality depends on the nature of the use of the system and the connected source.

In terms of design, the speakers are available in three colors namely matte blue, white and glossy black. Thanks to its construction, weight and the presence of non-slip panels, it sits well on the table, whether it is glass, wood, veneer or anything else. Appearance as such is very subjective, the egg shape of the enclosures may not suit everyone. However, this is a traditional design that is very well incorporated in this particular design.

The reason why people buy KEF speakers is, of course, the sound, and in that respect, everything here is absolutely fine. Promotional materials appeal to an amazingly clear sound performance, which is combined with (nowadays relatively rare) neutrality of speech and excellent readability. And that's exactly what the customer gets. The KEF EGG speaker system plays excellently, the sound is clear, easy to read and allows you to focus on individual elements when listening, whether it is sharp guitar riffs, melodic piano tones, great-sounding vocals or powerful bass sequences when listening to drum'n'bass.

After a long time, we have a setup in the test where one band of the acoustic spectrum is not amplified at the expense of the others. KEF EGG will not offer you disarming bass that will shake your soul. On the other hand, they offer sound that you will never get from over-bass systems, because they simply do not have the capacity and parameters for it.

Thanks to this variability, the KEF EGG can be used in many different situations. "Eggs" can serve you as a great addition to your MacBook/Mac/PC, as well as find use as a speaker system designed purely for room sound. You can also connect a pair of speakers to a TV using an optical cable. In this case, however, the absence of significantly stronger bass could be a bit limiting.

During testing, I came across only a few small things that slightly spoiled my impression of very good speakers. First of all, it is about the feel and operation of perhaps too many plastic buttons. If you're going to use the included controller to manipulate the speaker, you probably won't care about this shortcoming. However, if you have the system next to your computer, the plastic and loud clicks of the buttons don't sound very premium and somewhat out of sync with the overall feel of these great boxes. The second issue was related to situations where the speakers are connected to the default device via Bluetooth - after a few minutes of inactivity, the speakers automatically turn off, which is a bit annoying. For a fully wireless solution, this approach is understandable. Not so much for a set that is permanently plugged into an outlet.

The conclusion is basically very simple. If you are looking for speakers that do not take up too much space, have an attractive design, but above all offer a great listening experience without strong accents of selected sound bands, I can only recommend the KEF EGG. The sound production is very pleasant, so listeners of most genres will find their way. The speakers have enough power, as well as connectivity options. The purchase price exceeding 10 crowns is not low, but this is determined by what one gets for one's money.
