Tech companies, including Samsung, file tons of patent applications every year. Some of them will indeed sooner or later appear in the final products that are presented to the public, others will never be used. An interesting new patent filed by Samsung recently surfaced that could revolutionize in-car navigation.

The patent mentions augmented reality (AR) glasses, which would allow the driver to see instructions for the next drive right in front of their eyes. Although some current cars are equipped with technology that allows navigation data to be displayed directly on the windshield, the advantage of these glasses would be that the driver would see the instructions in front of him at all times. Additionally, the patent details also talk about other information that the glasses could display, such as places of interest, gas stations, exits, and the like. A concrete example of the functionality of the glasses is given directly in the patent – when you look at a petrol station, you will see petrol prices right in front of you.

The AR glasses should also include two cameras, the first one would monitor the situation in front of the car and the second one (or even a third one) would record the driver himself, so he could control the navigation with gestures. For this whole idea to work, Samsung would have to ensure compatibility with the navigation found in phones and cars, which could be quite a difficult task.

It is possible that we will actually meet these glasses in the coming years, because there have been reports that a rival company Apple is also preparing AR glasses. Maybe we will witness an interesting fight.
