Samsung has long been recognized as a leading innovator not only in the world of mobile technology. For example, the South Korean tech giant was the first to launch a commercially available foldable smartphone Galaxy Fold or developed the first 108Mpx sensor for smartphone cameras. Now we have a new patent that mentions a camera assembly consisting of six lenses. However, there is more news.

The patent application is really extensive with fifty-five pages, because it contains one big innovation – tilting camera sensors. According to the patent, Samsung plans to use a camera in a smartphone that will consist of five wide-angle lenses supplemented by one telephoto lens (or 4+1). Each of the sensors of the individual cameras should be able to tilt independently of the others. What will this solution bring us? According to the South Korean company, better images in low light conditions, better focus or higher dynamic range. The combination of such cameras will also make it possible to take panoramic photos with a bokeh effect, i.e. a blurred background. Another indisputable advantage is that the fields of view of the individual cameras overlap, thanks to the tilting sensors, and thus it is possible to capture much more detail. However, this technology will not only have a positive effect on photos, but also on video, which could be wider-angle and with better image stabilization. The last benefit is energy saving, because only those lenses that are really needed should be active.

The only negative feature of tilt sensors can be their demand for space, it could happen that the cameras will stick out more. Perhaps Samsung will not solve this problem at all, because not all patents will appear in the final products. Anyway, it would be interesting to see this very camera lineup next year at Galaxy S21 (S30).
