Six organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League and the NAACP, have come together in protests across the US in recent weeks to call for a halt to Facebook advertising campaigns throughout July over Facebook's failure to curb the spread of hate speech. For Viber, Facebook's failure to buck the trend is another problem in a series that follows cases like the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the personal data of 87 million users was misused by a private firm. As a result, the app has decided to take the #StopHateForProfit campaign one step further by severing all business ties with Facebook.

Djamel Agaoua, CEO of Viber: “Facebook continues to show that it does not understand its role in today's world. From the misuse of personal data, to insufficient communication security, to the inability to take the necessary steps to protect the public from hateful rhetoric, Facebook has gone too far. We are not the ones who decide the truth, but the fact that people suffer because of the spread of dangerous content is a fact, and companies need to take a clear stand on this.”

The steps required to remove everything are expected to be completed in early July 2020. Promotion or any other spending on Facebook has been stopped with immediate effect.
