South Korea's Samsung is known for being extremely accommodating and generous to its directors and senior management. The company pays such high-ranking executives astronomical sums, and one would logically expect the director of the mobile division, Koh Dong-Jin, to be the same. But as the survey showed, DJ Koh, as this legendary head of smartphones from Samsung is called in the West, did not get much in terms of bonuses. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, his colleagues credited record amounts to their accounts, often in the millions of dollars. For example, former CEO and vice chairman Kwon Oh-hyun took home $9.5 million and another $7.75 million in retirement pay, even though he has not worked for the company since 2018 and only functions as an advisor.

Deputy CEO Kim Ki-nam, on the other hand, received $840 in bonuses and another $185 as a reward for leading the semiconductor division. The head of consumer electronics, Kim Hyun-seok, added another 450 to his 135 salary, and as it turned out, DJ Koh was somewhat sharp. Although the compensation package was around 600 dollars, which the director of the mobile division certainly cannot complain about, the bonuses were somewhat lacking and so were the rewards. According to South Korean media, Samsung allegedly chose this tactic to motivate Koh Dong-Jin and at the same time punish him for not complying with the standards regarding smartphone sales.
