The latest beta version of the communication application WhatsApp for Android suggests that significant security improvements are on the way for those users who use the web version of the app alongside the mobile version. In the foreseeable future, they could theoretically receive support for authentication using fingerprints.

Na WABetaInfo website appeared this week informace that more security improvements are coming soon for WhatsApp beta version 2.20200.10. A web application called WhatsApp Web is quite popular among users. It serves as a supplement to the classic mobile version of this messenger, and until now users could link it to their account by scanning a QR code on a computer monitor. According to the website WABetaInfo, in the future it should be possible to activate the login to the web version of WhatsApp after authentication with the help of a fingerprint on the relevant mobile device.

This privacy improvement is quite important - with the current authentication method, it is theoretically possible for multiple strangers to gain access to the web version of WhatsApp on a computer. In the future, however, it could be possible to log in to WhatsApp Web even after loading a fingerprint. It is not yet clear whether the application will also include authentication using the Face Unlock function in the future. Since a number of smartphones with the operating system Android supports this authentication method. It is also not yet clear whether fingerprint authentication will completely replace QR code loading in the future - many older smartphones lack this function. In any case, the mentioned version is still in a very early stage of development, and there are no plans yet to include fingerprint authentication in the full version informace.
