Notification LEDs, which used to be part of a number of smartphones, are no longer seen much in modern devices. For many users, these LEDs were a useful tool that informed them of incoming notifications without having to wake up the phone's display. According to available reports, it looks like LEDs could be making a grand comeback in future generations of Samsung's foldable smartphones - reported this week by a server LetsGoDigital.

This is evidenced by the patent recently filed by Samsung. According to this patent, the South Korean giant could equip its future foldable smartphones with notification LED strips - these should be located on their hinge. A model was used as an example in the mentioned patent Galaxy From the Fold 2 – theoretically, users could expect notification LED strips with the arrival of the next generation of this model. The strip on the hinge of the phone should be composed of red, green, blue and white LEDs along its entire length. Colored LEDs could allow for a richer variety of notifications and visual effects that users could customize, assigning different lighting types and color combinations to specific apps and notification types.

On Samsung's part, this is a very smart use of the space on the hinge of the phone, but it is not clear to what extent the presence of the LED indicator strip will affect the strength of the hinge. However, placing the LED strip on the joint is definitely practical in terms of visibility, and it could also give the phones an original aesthetic. However, the practical application of the patent may look completely different in the end - if it is implemented at all. Samsung smartphone Galaxy Z Fold 3 should be introduced in the third quarter of next year.
