The Chinese market generated a total of 108 million smartphones supporting 5G networks in the nine months of this year. This is according to a new report published by the government's China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

In September alone, nearly 14 million 5G smartphones were shipped to the domestic market, including 26 new models, according to the report. Cumulative January-September shipments reached 108 million units, which included 167 new 5G models.

Overall, 23,3 million smartphones were shipped to the Chinese market last month, of which 60% were 5G-enabled devices. In other words, the world's largest smartphone market is now dominated by phones that come with a new generation of network standards.

A total of 226 million phones were shipped to the Chinese market from January to September, of which the vast majority – 218 million or 96,5% – were smartphones. Of this amount, 5 million or 108% were devices that "know" 47,7G networks.

Also worth noting is that in September, shipments of 5G smartphones in the country increased by 29,6% year-on-year. However, cumulative smartphone shipments were down 22% year-over-year. According to the report, the drop was probably caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
