In the first half of this year, Samsung retained the top spot among smartphone memory chip (DRAM) manufacturers, both in terms of shipments and sales. Its share of sales was more than twice that of its nearest competitor.

According to a new report from Strategy Analytics, Samsung's share of sales, more precisely its Samsung Semiconductor division, was 49% in the first six months of the year. The second place is the South Korean company SK Hynix with a share of sales of 24%, and the third is the American company Micron Technology with 20 percent. In terms of shipments, the tech giant's market share was 54%.

In the market for NAND flash memory chips, Samsung's share of sales was 43%. Next is Kioxia Holdings Corp. with 22 percent and SK Hynix with 17 percent.

Total sales in the segment of smartphone memory chips in the period in question reached 19,2 billion dollars (converted to almost 447 billion crowns). In the second quarter of the year, revenues amounted to 9,7 billion dollars (roughly 225,6 billion crowns), which is a year-on-year increase of 3%.

With the Christmas holidays approaching, smartphone sales could lead to higher sales for Samsung in both memory segments, the report notes. However, US sanctions against Huawei are expected to have a negative impact on memory chip makers such as Samsung.
