I can't even remember all those songs where I only remembered the melody, but because I didn't know the lyrics, I couldn't find them anymore. A similar thing has probably happened to everyone, including developers working on Google Now. This is because it now offers to search for songs by simply humming their melody. Just a few days after what Apple announced that Siri can search for songs just by reading the lyrics, so Google is striking back with its own voice assistant. The new feature is available now, and the search results depend a lot on your ability to hum accurately.

My rendition of I See Fire couldn't find the original version by Ed Sheeran.

I'm probably not very good at humming, because during my testing Google found popular songs like Yesterday and Let It Be by The Beatles thanks to my inaccurate rendition, but the algorithm ran into problems with other songs. Part of David Bowie's discography was accurately found by the assistant only after I replaced humming with whistling, which the service also supports. In the descending order of success of humming-whistling-singing searches, the popularity of the song apparently depends, when more popular songs are better recognized by the program thanks to the machine learning technology used. Or I'm really terrible at humming.

Google itself boasts of the advanced technologies it has deployed in the development of new features. The algorithms are said to remove all unnecessary sounds from each of the analyzed songs to end up with a skeletal melody, which they then match to the input from the user's device.
