Samsung announced that its Eco-Life Lab microbiology laboratory received certificates from the prestigious German product testing institute TÜV Rheinland for discovering new ways to test microbial activities in electronic devices such as smartphones. Specifically, these are ISO 846 and ISO 22196 certificates.

The ISO 846 certificate was awarded to Samsung's Eco-Life laboratory for discovering a way to evaluate microbial activities on plastic surfaces, while the ISO 22196 certificate was awarded for developing a method for measuring antibacterial activities on plastics and non-porous surfaces. The company hired various experts earlier this year to find the cause of mold growth, harmful microbial activity and odors that can be found in electronic devices such as smartphones or computers.

The laboratory was established in 2004 for the purpose of analyzing harmful substances and in January of this year it started identifying microorganisms. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, consumers have become more concerned about personal hygiene and trying to protect themselves from harmful bacteria and viruses. Samsung said these certificates will strengthen its reputation and ability to quickly verify microbial activity in its products.

“Samsung has earned the public's trust with recent lab projects that allow the company to analyze factors that may cause hygiene and health issues. The company will increase its efforts to come up with measures to solve problems that may occur when using its products,” said Global CS Center Department Head Jeon Kyung-bin.
