Samsung's high ambitions in the field of smart home are not abating this year either - this is proven by a new report from incoPat, according to which the South Korean technology giant has become the second largest patent applicant (not to be confused with patent holder) in this field in the world this year.

Samsung should have filed 909 patent applications related to smart home technologies this year. It was surpassed only by the Chinese home appliance manufacturer Haier, which applied for approval of 1163 patents.

The third place was secured by Gree with 878 applications, the fourth place was taken by Midea, which submitted 812 applications (both again from China), and the top five is rounded off by another South Korean technology giant, LG, with 782 applications. The companies Google and Apple and on others Panasonic and Sony.

Samsung's smart home platform - SmartThings - has been growing in popularity recently in various markets, including the Netherlands, where the company recently launched the Welcome To The Easy Life campaign. Starting next year, Mercedes-Benz S-Class cars will use the platform, and Samsung even used it to create a spooky Halloween marketing campaign.

While Samsung's smart home ambitions are high, it's worth remembering that the giant is the second largest patent applicant, not holder (the number of patents obtained by individual companies is not disclosed in the report). Even so, Samsung recorded the highest number of patent applications related to smart home technologies in the last fifteen years – a total of 9447.
