The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) this week published a patent application filed by Samsung Electronics. The mentioned patent describes an electronic device with multiple folds. However, the patent application does not relate to a specific smart device, but to the specific folding method and asymmetry required to implement a bi-fold display.

Thanks to a patent application from Samsung Electronics, we can get a rough idea of what it would look like if there was a smart mobile device that folded in a Z shape. bending to both sides. A device of this type should therefore be provided with two different types of joints, and a third panel would be part of it, which would be located on the outside of the device.

A panel with a display exposed in this way is understandably much more susceptible to damage, so it would be necessary to introduce a number of specific measures during production. However, the patent description does not specify in what way the external display should be protected. As with all other patent applications, it is necessary to approach the current one with a grain of salt. Filing an application alone does not guarantee that the patent will be put into practice, so it would certainly be premature to rejoice at the sight of a new foldable smartphone or tablet from Samsung's workshop. However, the patent application is at the same time clear evidence that the South Korean giant is apparently flirting with ideas for a different form of folding smartphones - after all, the shape of the letter "Z" is definitely not foreign to Samsung in this area.
