Samsung and IBM will work together to develop a 5G project that aims to help businesses in all industries modernize their operations using edge computing solutions, 5G technology and hybrid cloud. In other words, the partners want to help the corporate sector in what is referred to as the fourth industrial revolution or Industry 4.0.

Clients will be able to use 5G devices Galaxy and Samsung's portfolio of enterprise end-to-end networking products – from outdoor and indoor base stations to millimeter wave technology – together with IBM's open hybrid cloud technologies, edge computing platform, AI solutions and consulting and integration services. Companies will also have access to other essential technologies associated with Industry 4.0, such as the Internet of Things or augmented reality.

Red Hat, a software company belonging to IBM, will also be involved in the collaboration, and in cooperation with both partners will investigate the interoperability of Samsung hardware and software with the IBM Edge Application Manager platform, which runs on the open hybrid cloud platform Red Hat OpenShift.

This is not the first recent collaboration between Samsung and IBM. Earlier this year, the South Korean tech giant announced that it would manufacture IBM's latest data center chip called the POWER10. It is built on a 7nm process and promises up to 20x higher computing power than the POWER9 chip.
