Last year was turbulent for many industries due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the smartphone market was also affected. According to a new report from analyst firm TrendForce, companies shipped a total of 1,25 billion devices on it, down 2019% from 11.

The top six brands were Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. By far the largest decline was seen by Huawei, due to US sanctions that prevent it from accessing chips and prohibiting cooperation with Google, the creator of the operating system Android.

Samsung shipped 263 million smartphones last year and held a 21% market share, Apple 199 million (15%), Huawei 170 million (13%), Xiaomi 146 million (11%), Oppo 144 million (11%) and Vivo 110 million, giving it a share of 8%.

Analysts at TrendForce predict that the market will bounce back to growth in the next 12 months (mainly due to rising demand in developing markets) and companies will produce 1,36 billion smartphones, up 9% from this year.

For Huawei, however, the prediction is rather bleak - according to it, it will ship only 45 million smartphones this year and its market share will shrink to just 3%, leaving it out of the top five and one percentage point ahead of the ambitious Chinese manufacturer Transsion, under which it belongs brands like iTel or Tecno.

On the contrary, Xiaomi should grow the most, which according to analysts will produce 198 million smartphones this year and its market share will increase to 14%.
