Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has released a survey showing a sharp increase in the number of people buying smart home devices between March and December last year. Specifically, 51% of respondents purchased at least one such device during this period. Unsurprisingly, the coronavirus pandemic is "to blame".

The online survey, conducted by Xiaomi in collaboration with Wakefield Research, involved 1000 US citizens over the age of 18 and was conducted between 11-16. December last year.

Three out of five respondents said that since their leisure and work environments have merged into one, they find it difficult to find another space at home to relax. Of these, 63% have purchased a smart home device, 79% have configured at least one room at home, and 82% have customized a room for working from home. Customizing a room for work was especially popular among young people – 91% of Generation Z and 80% of Millennials.

The survey also shows that consumers have purchased an average of two new smart devices since last March. For generation Z, it was an average of three devices. 82% of respondents agreed that a home with smart devices brings extraordinary benefits.

It's also worth noting that 39% of those surveyed plan to upgrade their devices this year, and 60% will continue to use the home for activities that are usually done outside.
