At CES 2021, Samsung introduced a program called Galaxy Upcycling at Home. It is an extension of the recycling program Galaxy Upcycling, introduced in 2017, was created to extend the life of old equipment Galaxy by modifying them for further use (this is how they became e.g. feeding dispensers or a gaming machine). Specifically, the new program will allow them to be reused as IoT devices through a simple software update.

Samsung said it will update old phones Galaxy so that they can be turned into IoT devices later this year. In the presentation video, he showed that it is possible to turn a smartphone into, for example, a baby monitor in this way. This modified phone captures and monitors the sound and sends an alert whenever it hears a baby crying.

Program Galaxy Upcycling has not yet been fully accessible to the public. Rather, it was a test platform to illustrate how old technology could be adapted to a new purpose. Samsung first demonstrated the concept on a group of old smartphones Galaxy The S5 he turned into a bitcoin mining rig and showed off with his phone last year Galaxy powered medical eye scanner.

The new update of the program will make it possible to reach a much wider public than before, since users will no longer need solder or other tools to recycle an old device, but only updated software.
