Social networks do not want the outgoing US President Donald Trump to use their reach to call for more wrongdoing. After other platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram decided to block his accounts, Snapchat followed suit. A company spokesman said in interview with CCN, that it is a decision "in the interest of public safety". The ban is based on Trump's past behavior on the social network, which has incited hatred and spread hatredinformace. Banning the Snapchat account will be permanent for the president.

The final straw for the companies was Trump's instigation of the attack on the US Capitol, which took place on January 6. Thanks to his comments on Twitter, the standard planned protest of Trump's supporters turned into an attempt to stop the verification of the results of last year's presidential election and the formal confirmation of Joe Biden as the legitimately elected successor. Trump's behavior, according to many commentators, completely contradicts the proper behavior of a decent statesman in the democratic process. Overall, it was the culmination of the president's consistent questioning of the election results and the mistrust he spread in the mainstream media.

While Trump has certainly violated the terms of use of the social platforms he is now banned from, the permanent ban on these networks is seen by some as a restriction on free speech. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, for example, expressed herself in the sense that the removal of statesmen's accounts should only follow the approval of this action by the country's government.
