At the introduction of new Samsung flagships Galaxy S21 something important almost happened, namely the launch of two new S Pen touch pens, including the Pro model. Galaxy The S21 Ultra 5G supports both (as well as current and past models). In addition, it announced support for third-party styluses.

The new S Pen is larger in all its dimensions compared to the current one, which makes it more comfortable. Samsung may have made it bigger because it doesn't have to fit in the phone's thin body; instead it is attached to the side of selected cases.

This is a passive stylus (i.e. not powered by a battery) so it lacks the Bluetooth functionality of the newer models Galaxy Notes. However, thanks to Wacom technology, the S21 Ultra can detect when the user presses a button to trigger certain actions or shortcuts (so long as the pen is close to the display).

Then there's the S Pen Pro, which is even bigger than the base model and which, unlike it, has Bluetooth capabilities. So users will be able to use it as a remote control to play music or camera shutter, for example. This version will also work with existing S Pen compatible devices once they are updated to One UI 3.1. This applies, for example, to the series phones Galaxy Notes 20 or tablets like Galaxy Tab S6 a S7.

The basic S Pen costs $40, and for $70 you can also get the case that comes with it. The S Pen Pro will go on sale later this year for an as yet undisclosed price.

In perhaps even more important news, Samsung is opening up the S Pen to third-party companies that sell styluses with said Wacom technology. It is not clear at this time if these pens will work immediately or if a software update will be required. Supported models include, for example, Hi-Uni Digital Mitsubishi Pencil, Staedtler Noris digital or LAMY Al-star black EMR.
