MediaTek introduced the second generation of its flagship chips with 5G support – Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100. Both are the company's first chipsets manufactured using the 6nm process and the first to use the Cortex-A78 processor core.

The more powerful chipset is the Dimensity 1200. It has four Cortex-A78 processor cores, one of which is clocked at 3 GHz and the others at 2,6 GHz, and four economical Cortex A-55 cores that run at a frequency of 2 GHz. Graphics operations are handled by the nine-core Mali-G77 GPU.

For comparison, MediaTek's previous flagship chipset, the Dimensity 1000+, used older Cortex-A77 cores that ran at 2,6GHz. The Cortex-A78 core is estimated to be roughly 20% faster than the Cortex-A77, according to ARM, which manufactures it. Overall, the processor performance of the new chipset is 22% higher and 25% more energy efficient than the previous generation.

The chip supports displays with a refresh rate of up to 168 Hz, and its five-core image processor can handle sensors with a resolution of up to 200 MPx. Its 5G modem offers – just like its sibling – a maximum download speed of 4,7 GB/s.

The Dimensity 1100 chipset is also equipped with four Cortex-A78 processor cores, which, unlike the more powerful chip, all run at a frequency of 2,6 GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores with a frequency of 2 GHz. Like the Dimensity 1200, it uses a Mali-G77 graphics chip.

The chip supports 144Hz displays and cameras with a resolution of up to 108 MPx. Both chipsets are 20% faster when processing photos taken at night and have a separate night mode for panoramic images.

The first smartphones with new chipsets "on board" should arrive at the end of March or the beginning of April, and they will be news from companies such as Realme, Xiaomi, Vivo or Oppo.
