How we reported last week, Samsung plans to focus more on acquisitions over the next few years, potentially "fishing" in the semiconductor waters. Now, news has hit the airwaves that the South Korean tech giant has already looked at the first potential candidates - the companies NXP, Texas Instruments and Renesas.

The company NXP comes from the Netherlands and develops application processors for cars, the well-known American technology giant Texas Instruments specializes in powerful high-voltage semiconductors, and the Japanese company Renesas is a leading manufacturer of microcontrollers for the automotive market.

Samsung is targeting the automotive industry as part of its acquisition plans, as cars become increasingly dependent on semiconductors, according to South Korean media. In 2018, the average value of semiconductors in a car was around $400, but some automotive market analysts expect the electric vehicle segment to help push that figure past $1 soon.

If Samsung proves analysts right and makes a strong entry into the automotive semiconductor industry, insiders predict that its next acquisition will be worth more than its last big deal -- the $8 billion acquisition of HARMAN International Industries in 2016.
