Samsung is not only the largest manufacturer of memory chips, but also the second largest buyer of chips in the world. The tech giant spent tens of billions of dollars buying semiconductor chips last year, spurred by increased demand for computers and other consumer electronics during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a new report from research and consulting company Gartner, Samsung's key division Samsung Electronics spent $36,4 billion (roughly CZK 777 billion) on semiconductor chips last year, which is 20,4% more than in 2019.

He was the biggest buyer of chips last year Apple, which spent 53,6 billion dollars (approximately 1,1 trillion crowns) on them, which represented an 11,9% "global" share. Compared to 2019, the Cupertino technology giant increased its spending on chips by 24%.

The South Korean tech giant benefited from a ban on Huawei products and higher demand for laptops, tablets and servers during the pandemic. With people working more from home and learning remotely due to the pandemic, demand for cloud servers has skyrocketed, driving up demand for Samsung's DRAMs and SSDs. The increase in demand for Apple's chips was driven by higher sales of AirPods, iPads, iPhones and Macs.

Last year, Samsung announced the goal of becoming the largest chip manufacturer in the world by 2030, overtaking the Taiwanese semiconductor giant TSMC, for which purpose it intends to invest 115 billion dollars (almost 2,5 trillion crowns) in this decade.
