Not long after the popular application for creating and sharing short videos TikTok has been targeted by the US FTC, it will also be investigated by the European Union, more precisely by the commission, at the initiative of the consumer organization The European Consumer Organization (BEUC). The reason is supposed to be a possible violation of the EU law on the protection of personal data GDPR and the exposure of children and young people to harmful content.

“In just a few years, TikTok has become one of the most popular social media apps with millions of users across Europe. However, TikTok is betraying its users by massively violating their rights. We found a number of violations of consumer protection rights, which is why we filed a complaint against TikTok.” BEUC Director Monique Goyens said in a statement. "Together with our members - consumer protection organizations across Europe - we are urging the authorities to act quickly. They need to act now to ensure that TikTok is a place where consumers, especially children, can have fun without having their rights taken away.” added Goyens.

TikTok has already had problems in Europe, more specifically in Italy, where authorities temporarily blocked it from users whose age could not be verified after the recent tragic death of a 10-year-old user who participated in a dangerous challenge. The country's data protection regulator also accused TikTok of violating an Italian law that requires parental consent when children under 14 log on to social platforms, and criticized the way the app handles user data.
