Samsung's "next-gen" chipset with an AMD graphics chip will be called the Exynos 2200, according to a new report from South Korea. More importantly, though, it's said to make its debut not in Samsung's flagship smartphone, as expected, but in its ARM laptop with Windows 10, which should be launched in the second half of this year.

As you know from our previous news, Samsung confirmed in January that it is working with AMD on a next-generation mobile graphics chip that will appear in the "next flagship product". The tech giant didn't specify which device it would be, but most fans assumed it would be its next flagship smartphone.

That it will be a laptop, according to ZDNet Korea, may come as a surprise to some, but it fits well with Samsung's longer-term plans to challenge Qualcomm in the ARM laptop segment.

Samsung has released several of these laptops in the past, but they were powered by Qualcomm chipsets. With this type of laptop gaining popularity recently, Samsung may want to gain more market share for ARM chipsets and/or reduce its reliance on Qualcomm.

It is not clear at this point if the Exynos 2200 will be Samsung's only high-end chipset with AMD GPUs to be introduced this year, or if it is designed specifically for laptops and the tech giant is preparing another chipset with AMD GPUs for the mobile segment.
