Although Samsung maintained its leadership in the European smartphone market in 2020, its sales suffered quite a bit due to the coronavirus pandemic. Lower-than-expected sales of last year's flagship line also contributed to this Galaxy S20. Even though the tech giant sold fewer smartphones year over year, its market share grew from 31 to 32%. This was reported by Counterpoint Research in its report.

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung sold 59,8 million smartphones in Europe last year, 12% less than in 2019. Its year-on-year market share could only grow because the overall market fell by 14% last year. The biggest contributor to this was Huawei, whose sales fell by 43% year-on-year.

Last year's smartphone number two was on the old continent Apple, which sold 41,3 million phones, down one percent year-over-year, and its market share increased from 19 to 22%. In third place was Xiaomi, which managed to sell 26,7 million smartphones, up 90% year-on-year, and its share doubled to 14%.

Fourth place went to Huawei, which was still struggling in Europe last year Applemo second place and which sold 22,9 million smartphones, which was 43% less year-on-year. Its share fell by seven percentage points to 12%. Rounding out the top five is Oppo, which sold 6,5 million smartphones, 82% more than last year, and its share increased from 2 to 4%.

Globally, the increasingly predatory Chinese brand Realme saw the biggest growth ever, up 1083%, as it sold 1,6 million smartphones. Of course, such a sharp increase was possible only because the brand grew from a very low base - last year it sold 0,1 million smartphones and its share was 0%. Last year, it ranked seventh in Europe, where it only entered in 2019, with a one percent share.

For completeness, OnePlus finished ahead of Realme, selling 2,2 million smartphones, which was 5% more year-on-year, and whose share remained the same at 1%.
