Global smartphone shipments could grow by 5,5% this year, with 5G development expected to drive this growth. This is stated by the analyst company IDC in its latest report.

IDC expects smartphone shipments to increase 13,9% year-over-year in the first quarter of this year, and that 5G-enabled smartphones will account for more than 40 percent of all smartphone production this year. In 2025, it could already be almost 70%. According to the analyst company, pent-up demand for smartphones will also contribute to increased deliveries.

The report also mentions that supply chains, manufacturers and various other channels are now better prepared for further lockdowns to meet demand, which remains strong despite the current state of lockdowns. Last year, deliveries through online channels grew to 30% of the total share, which is eight percentage points more than in 2019.

IDC also estimates that smartphone shipments will rise 6% in China and 3,5% in the US this year. Deliveries should be "kicked" by the development of 5G in both markets and the success of the iPhone 12. He also expects that the average price androidov's 5G smartphone will drop to $2025 (approximately CZK 404) by 8 thanks to competition.
