Even though Samsung is one of the biggest technology companies in the world, even it is not immune to the current global chip shortage. The South Korean technology giant has reportedly signed a "deal" with UMC (United Microelectronics Corporation) regarding the production of image sensors and display drivers. These components should be manufactured using a 28nm process.

Samsung is said to sell 400 units of manufacturing equipment to UMC, which the Taiwanese firm will use to make photo sensors, integrated circuits for display drivers and other components for the tech giant. UMC reportedly plans to produce 27 wafers per month at its Nanke factory, with mass production starting in 2023.

Samsung is currently registering high demand for its photo sensors, especially for 50MPx, 64MPx and 108MPx sensors. The company is expected to introduce a 200 MPx sensor soon and has already confirmed that it is working on a 600 MPx sensor that exceeds the capabilities of the human eye.

According to the marketing-research firm TrendForce, the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the foundry sector last year was TSMC with a share of 54,1%, the second was Samsung with a share of 15,9%, and the first three largest players in this field are completed by Global Foundries with a share of 7,7% .
