Samsung was among the first brands to launch a 5nm smartphone chipset. After Apple presented last October iPhone 12 with a 5nm A14 Bionic chip, Samsung followed it a month later with a chipset Exynos 1080 and in January with a flagship chip Exynos 2100. Qualcomm's first 5nm Snapdragon 888 chipset was unveiled in December. The flagship chip of another big player in this field, MediaTek, is still manufactured using the 6nm process, however, it could be the one who "burns the pond" for others and will be the first to present a chip built on the 4nm process.

MediaTek will overtake according to a new report from China Apple, Samsung and Qualcomm and will launch its first 4nm mobile chipset this year. Samsung's main rival in this field, TSMC, is said to begin mass production of the 4nm Dimensity chip in the last quarter of this year or the first quarter of next year. MediaTek's upcoming flagship chipset will reportedly compete with high-end Snapdragon chips.

The new chip is said to have already been ordered by some smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung. If the report is true, the Korean tech giant could launch at least one high-end phone (or upper mid-range phone) with this chipset. Chinese companies Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo were also expected to order the chip.

MediaTek has been known for many years as a manufacturer of cheap chipsets for budget phones. However, this is changing recently and the Taiwanese manufacturer has ambitions to produce competitive chips in higher classes. Its latest flagship chip, the Dimensity 1200, is comparable in performance to last year's high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. With Samsung's help, MediaTek even became the world's largest seller of mobile chips.
