The Chromebook market experienced unprecedented growth last year, riding the wave of working and learning from home caused by the coronavirus pandemic. And this situation continued in the first three months of this year. Chromebook shipments during this period reached 13 million, increasing roughly 4,6 times year-on-year. Samsung also benefited significantly from the situation, which recorded 496% higher growth year-on-year.

According to the latest report from IDC, Samsung shipped more than one million Chromebooks globally in the first quarter. Although it remained fifth in the Google Chrome OS notebook market, its share increased from 6,1% to 8% year-on-year.

The market leader and the highest year-on-year growth – by 633,9% – was reported by the American company HP, which shipped 4,4 million Chromebooks and its share was 33,5%. China's Lenovo came in second, shipping 3,3 million Chromebooks (a 356,2% increase) and its share reaching 25,6%. Taiwan's Acer didn't grow as much as the other brands (roughly "only" 151%) and dropped from first place to third, shipping 1,9 million Chromebooks for a 14,5% share. The fourth largest player in this field was the American Dell, which shipped 1,5 million Chromebooks (a growth of 327%) and its share was 11,3%.

Despite such massive growth, the Chromebook market is still significantly smaller than the tablet market, which sold more than 40 million in the first quarter.
