Samsung may have put its virtual reality ambitions on hold, but it may play a central role in Sony's plans for its "next-gen" VR headset, the PSVR 2. While many VR headset manufacturers use LCD technology in them, Sony reportedly wants to use the PSVR 2 Samsung's OLED technology.

Both LCD and OLED display technologies have their pros and cons when used in VR. OLED technology is known to offer better contrast and response time, while LCD VR panels can have higher resolution and less of a "screen door" effect (an effect where the user appears to be looking at the world through a mesh screen).

According to Bloomberg, Sony plans to launch the PSVR 2 at the end of next year. Neither the Japanese technology giant, nor Samsung, or its Samsung Display division, did not comment on the matter. The original PlayStation VR headset went on sale in 2016 and used Samsung's 120Hz AMOLED display. The panel had a diagonal of 5,7 inches and a relatively low resolution for a VR headset – 1920 x 1080 px (960 x 1080 px for each eye).

The specifications of Samsung's alleged OLED display for the PSVR 2 are unknown at this time, but the panel can be expected to offer a higher resolution and pixel density. Samsung has been trying to push the limits of pixel density with these displays for a long time, but its first OLED panel promising a density of 1000 ppi it is not expected to arrive until 2024.
