In the first quarter of this year, a total of 135,7 million phones with support for 5G networks were shipped to the global market, which is 6% more year-on-year. The biggest year-on-year growth was recorded by the Samsung and Vivo brands, by 79% and 62%. On the contrary, it showed a large decrease – by 23% Apple. This was stated by Strategy Analytics in its latest report.

In the first three months of this year, Samsung delivered 17 million 5G phones to the global market, and with a share of 12,5%, it was fourth in the order. Vivo shipped 19,4 million smartphones with support for the latest network and ranked third with a share of 14,3%. The South Korean smartphone giant has benefited from strong demand for its flagship line Galaxy S21 in South Korea, the US and parts of Europe, while Vivo benefited from strong sales in its home country of China and Europe.

Apple despite a significant year-on-year decrease, it clearly maintained a leading position on the market for 5G phones - in the period in question, it delivered 40,4 million of them to the market and its share was 29,8%. Second was Oppo, which shipped 21,5 million 5G smartphones (up 55% year-on-year) and held a 15,8% share. Rounding out the top five biggest players in this field is Xiaomi with 16,6 million phones shipped, 41 percent year-on-year growth and a 12,2 percent share.

The demand for 5G-enabled devices is naturally gaining momentum in all regions of the world, with the biggest "drivers" being the Chinese, American and Western European markets. Strategy Analytics expects global shipments of 5G phones to reach 624 million by the end of this year.
