There are several reasons to unlock your phone's bootloader, but it comes with the side effect of blocking some apps. Now it seems that Samsung has added another side effect to this, and it's a much more annoying one.

The website XDA Developers discovered that the unlocking of the bootloader in the new "puzzle" of Samsung Galaxy From Fold 3 will block all five cameras. Neither the default photo app, nor third-party photo apps, and even the phone's face unlock work.

Unlocking a phone from Samsung usually causes the device to fail Google's SafetyNet security checks, resulting in apps like Samsung Pay or Google Pay, and even streaming apps like Netflix, not working. This is understandable for financial and streaming applications, however, as device security is key for them. However, blocking essential hardware like the camera feels more like a punishment for "fiddling" with the phone. However, the Fold 3 will display a warning before unlocking the bootloader that this step will disable the camera.

The website notes that Sony has previously taken a similar step. The Japanese tech giant said at the time that unlocking the bootloader on its devices would erase some DRM security keys, affecting "advanced" camera features such as noise reduction. It is possible that a similar scenario is taking place in the case of the third Fold 3, in any case, not allowing at least basic access to the camera after unlocking the bootloader seems like a not entirely inadequate response.
