Samsung is thinking about using it to power its smart watches Galaxy harnessed solar energy. At least that's what a 2019 patent application, now discovered by LetsGoDigital, suggests.

A patent application published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in mid-September shows a "generic" smartwatch Galaxy with a strap with built-in solar cells. The application does not elaborate on how the system would be effective with them.

At the moment, it is not clear whether the solar cells would serve as the exclusive power source of the watch, or just as an auxiliary source that would work alongside the battery (such smart watches already exist, see e.g. Fenix 6x Pro Solar from Garmin). The question is also whether Samsung is currently working on such a watch at all, since the patent application does not automatically imply such a thing. Only time will tell if the Korean tech giant is serious about applying solar cells to future smartwatches.

In any case, Samsung already has some experience with this power supply method. It is used, for example, by remote controls new QLED TVs, which the company presented at the end of this year.
