Samsung is one of the largest manufacturers of semiconductor chips in the world. However, in terms of production capacity and technology, it lags behind the Taiwanese giant TSMC. In light of the ongoing global chip crisis, the South Korean giant has announced that it plans to triple its production capacity by 2026.

Samsung said on Thursday that its Samsung Foundry division will build at least one more chip factory and expand production capacity at existing manufacturing facilities. The move will allow it to better compete with market leader TSMC and newcomer Intel Foundry Services.

Samsung has been in talks with US authorities for some time to expand its factory in the Texas capital of Austin and build another plant in either Texas, Arizona or New York. Earlier, the company announced that it intends to spend more than 150 billion dollars (roughly 3,3 trillion crowns) to become the world's largest manufacturer of semiconductor chips.

Samsung Foundry currently produces chips for various clients, including giants such as IBM, Nvidia or Qualcomm. The company recently announced that it has begun mass production of 4nm chips and that its 3nm process chips will be available in the second half of next year.
