At CES 2022, Samsung presented its vision of future development called Together for Tomorrow. The speech was delivered by Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of DX (Device eXperience) at Samsung. He highlighted society's efforts to usher in a new age characterized by greater collaboration, adaptation to people's changing lifestyles, and innovation that means progress for society and the planet.

Together for tomorrow's vision empowers everyone to create positive change and fosters collaboration that addresses some of the planet's most pressing issues. The speech explained how Samsung wants to realize this vision through a series of sustainability initiatives, purposeful partnerships and customizable and connected technologies.

At the heart of Samsung's vision of a better future is what it calls everyday sustainability. This concept inspires her to put sustainability at the heart of everything she does. The company realizes its vision by introducing new production processes that have a low impact on the environment, ecological packaging, more sustainable operations and responsible disposal of products at the end of their life cycle.

Samsung's efforts to reduce carbon emissions throughout the manufacturing cycle have also earned the organization recognition Carbon Trust, the world's leading authority on carbon footprint. Last year, the Korean giant's memory chips helped with certification Carbon Trust to reduce carbon emissions by almost 700 tonnes.

Samsung's activities in this area extend far beyond semiconductor production and include the wider use of recycled materials. In order to achieve everyday sustainability in as many products as possible, Samsung's Visual Display Business plans to use 30 times more recycled plastics than in 2021. The company also unveiled plans to expand the use of recycled materials over the next three years in all mobile products and home appliances.

In 2021, all Samsung TV boxes contained recycled materials. This year, the company announced that it will expand the use of recycled materials to packaging materials inside the boxes. Recycled materials will now be included in Styrofoam, box handles and plastic bags. Samsung also announced the global expansion of its award-winning Eco-Packaging program. This program of turning cardboard boxes into cat houses, side tables and other useful pieces of furniture will now include packaging for household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, air purifiers and more.

Samsung is also incorporating sustainability into the way its products are used. This will allow people to further reduce their carbon footprint and participate in positive change for a better tomorrow. An example is the remarkable improvement of the Samsung SolarCell Remote, which avoids wasting batteries thanks to the built-in solar panel and can now be recharged not only during the day, but also at night. The improved SolarCell Remote can harvest electricity from the radio waves of devices such as Wi-Fi routers. “This controller will be bundled with other Samsung products, such as new TVs and home appliances, with the aim of preventing more than 200 million batteries from ending up in landfills. If you lined up these batteries in a row, it's like the distance from here, from Las Vegas, to Korea,” Han said.

In addition, Samsung plans that by 2025, all of its TVs and phone chargers will operate in standby mode with virtually zero consumption, thus avoiding wasted energy.

Another big challenge for the electronics industry is e-waste. Samsung has therefore collected more than five million tons of this waste since 2009. It launched a platform for mobile products last year Galaxy for the Planet, which was created with the aim of bringing concrete measures in the field of climate and minimizing the ecological footprint of devices during their life cycle.

The company's decision to make these technologies available reflects its commitment to innovation for everyday sustainability that transcends industry boundaries. The collaboration with Patagonia, which Samsung announced during the keynote, shows the type of innovation that can happen when companies, even from completely different industries, come together to solve environmental problems. The innovative solution the companies are proposing will help fight plastic pollution by enabling Samsung washing machines to minimize the entry of microplastics into waterways during washing.

"It's a serious problem and no one can solve it alone," says Vincent Stanley, director of Patagonia. Stanley praised the hard work and dedication of Samsung's engineers, calling the alliance "a perfect example of the collaboration we all need to help reverse climate change and restore a healthy nature."

"This collaboration is very beneficial, but it doesn't end there," added Han. "We will continue to seek new partnerships and collaboration opportunities to address the challenges facing our planet."

In addition to describing the steps it is taking to strengthen everyday sustainability, the Korean giant outlined the various ways it is developing technology to meet the diverse needs of consumers. Samsung understands that every person is unique and wants to customize their devices to fit their lifestyle, so they strive to find ways to help people redefine their relationship with the technology they use every day. This people-centered approach to innovation is a key pillar of Together for Tomorrow's vision.

The platforms and devices that Samsung presented at the event are related to the Screens Everywhere, Screens for All vision that Han mentioned at CES 2020.

The Freestyle is a lightweight and portable projector that provides a cinema-like experience for people in any environment. The projector is equipped with sound reproduction with the support of artificial intelligence, streaming applications and a number of useful functions known from Samsung smart TVs. It can be installed virtually anywhere and can project images up to 100 inches (254 cm).

The Samsung Gaming Hub app, in turn, offers an end-to-end platform for discovering and playing cloud and console games, and is set to launch in Samsung's smart TVs and monitors from 2022. The Odyssey Ark is a 55-inch, flexible and curved gaming monitor that takes the gaming experience to a new level level thanks to the ability to split the screen into multiple parts and simultaneously play games, video chat with friends or watch game videos.

To give people more options to use their home appliances according to their preferences, Samsung has announced the introduction of additional, even more customizable products in its Bespoke home appliance range. These include the new additions of Bespoke Samsung Family Hub and French Door refrigerators with three or four doors, dishwashers, stoves and microwaves. Samsung is also launching other new products such as the Bespoke Jet vacuum cleaner and the Bespoke washer and dryer, extending the range to every room in the home, giving people more options to customize their space to suit their style and needs.

Samsung is constantly exploring ways to help people get more out of their devices. The culmination of these efforts is the #YouMake project, which allows you to select and customize products according to what is most important to users and what suits them best. The initiative announced during the speech expands Samsung's vision for the Bespoke range beyond home appliances and brings it to life in smartphones and large-screen devices.

Creating a better future together requires not only building adaptability and sustainability into Samsung products, but also seamless connectivity. The company has demonstrated its commitment to usher in an era of truly seamless use of the benefits of the connected home through collaboration with partners and its latest products.

Unveiled for the first time at CES, the all-new Samsung Home Hub takes the connected home to the next level with SmartThings, which integrates with AI-connected appliances and simplifies home management. The Samsung Home Hub combines six SmartThings services into one handy device that gives users full control over their smart home and makes household chores easier.

In order to better work with different types of smart devices, the company announced that it plans to integrate SmartThings Hub into its 2022 model year TVs, smart monitors and Family Hub refrigerators. This will help make the connected home functions accessible and run smoothly for everyone interested in this technology.

Pointing to the need to offer people the best of smart home convenience regardless of product brand, Samsung also announced that it has become a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA), which brings together various manufacturers of smart home appliances. The organization's goal is to promote greater interoperability between devices from different brands to give consumers more choice and to increase the safety and security of products and services.
