What components are made from new materials derived from recycled fishing nets and PCM (Post-Consumer Material) we already told you. Samsung's original announcement regarding its latest program Galaxy but for the Planet may still have left some questions, which we will try to answer here.

First, we need to discuss where these recycled materials actually come from and what process they go through before Samsung can use them to make smartphone components. For ten years, the company has had a specialized team that has been dealing with solving problems with the recycling of mobile components.

Campaign "Galaxy for the Planet" is the latest initiative of this program and its goal is to help clean the oceans. However, to achieve its goals, Samsung has partnered with several other companies that specialize exclusively in recycling fishing nets from the oceans. The problem lies not only in the collection of discarded plastics, but also in the actual processing of the material for production.

From waste to high quality material

Fishing nets are polyamides, commonly known as nylon, which are difficult to recycle. The mechanical properties of this material deteriorate rapidly after prolonged exposure to UV radiation and sea water, and it is almost impossible to use these discarded fishing nets for any direct production. Not before they go through a painstaking recycling process.

Samsung has partnered with a company that collects, cuts, cleans and presses fishing nets into polyamide resin pellets. These pellets then go to another partner, who has the task of optimizing them to meet Samsung's strict requirements. The result is a high-quality plastic that is also environmentally friendly. The company claims to have developed several materials that are thermally and mechanically stable. Recycled fishing net plastic thus has 99% of the quality of other plastics that Samsung commonly uses in the production of smartphone components.

Post-consumer materials

In addition to recycled fishing nets, Samsung used some components in its production Galaxy S22 recycled PCM (Post-Consumer Materials). This recycled plastic comes from discarded plastic bottles and CD cases that are ground into small chips, extruded and filtered into uniform granules without any contamination.

Technically speaking, Samsung combines 20% recycled material from the oceans with regular plastics. Inside the row Galaxy The S22 is not the only component made entirely from recycled fishing net material. It will always be 20% recycled pellets and 80% conventional plastics. The same is true of recycled PCM. "Virgin" plastic is thus mixed with 20% PCM granules to create a more environmentally friendly plastic that meets Samsung's quality standards. Even so, it promises that it expects to process more than 2022 tons of fishing nets by the end of 50 that will not end up in the oceans.

As for which components are made from this mix of new and recycled materials, it's the internals of the series' volume buttons and power keys Galaxy S22 and S Penu chamber at Galaxy S22 Ultra. Samsung also used another variant of recycled PCM to make an integrated speaker module.
