Samsung is the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. According to data from several analytics companies, it shipped nearly 300 million units of its smartphones to the market last year alone. As you can imagine, to produce more than a quarter of a billion devices a year requires a really large production network.

The company has factories in several countries around the world. However, it doesn't really matter which model your model comes from, because Samsung maintains a uniform quality standard in all its factories.

The company's manufacturing plants

China

You would think that most phones Galaxy is made in China. After all, it is the "production center" for the whole world. It is also a place where Apple manufactures most of its iPhones not to mention that Chinese OEMs have come to dominate the smartphone market. But in reality, Samsung closed its last smartphone factory in China a long time ago. Since 2019, no phones have been manufactured here. Previously, there were two factories here, but as Samsung's market share in China fell below 1%, production was gradually reduced.

Vietnam

The two Vietnamese manufacturing plants are located in Thai Nguyen province, and produce not only smartphones, but also tablets and wearable devices. In addition, the company is planning to add another factory to these plants to further increase its manufacturing output, which currently stands at 120 million units per year. Most of Samsung's global shipments, including those for markets such as North America and Europe, come from Vietnam.

Indie

India is not only home to Samsung's largest mobile phone factory, but it is also the largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in the world. At least according to its production capacity. Samsung announced in 2017 that it would invest $620 million to double local production and inaugurated a factory in Noida in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh a year later. The production capacity of this factory alone is now 120 million units per year.

However, a large part of the production is intended for the local market. The latter is one of the most lucrative for Samsung. Due to import taxes in the country, Samsung needs local production to effectively compete with its rivals at the right price. The company also manufactures its phone series here Galaxy M a Galaxy A. However, Samsung can also export smartphones made here to markets in Europe, Africa and West Asia.

South Korea

Of course, Samsung also operates its manufacturing facilities in its home country of South Korea. Most of the components it gets from its sister companies are also manufactured there. However, its local smartphone factory accounts for less than ten percent of global shipments. The devices manufactured here are thus logically intended primarily for the local market.

Brazil

The Brazilian production plant was established in 1999. More than 6 employees work in the factory from where Samsung supplies its smartphones throughout Latin America. With high import taxes here, local manufacturing allows Samsung to offer its products in the country at a competitive price.

Indonesia

The company decided to start production of smartphones in this country only recently. The factory opened in 2015 and has a production capacity of approximately "only" 800 units per year. However, this is enough capacity for Samsung to meet at least local demand.

How Samsung's manufacturing priorities are changing

The smartphone market has changed significantly over the past ten years. Chinese smartphone manufacturers have become highly competitive in all market segments. Samsung itself has thus had to adapt, because it is coming under more and more pressure. This also led to a change in production priorities. In 2019, the company launched its first ODM smartphone, the model Galaxy A6s. This device was manufactured by a third party and exclusively for the Chinese market. Indeed, the ODM solution allows the company to increase margins on affordable devices. It is now expected to ship 60 million ODM smartphones to markets worldwide in the near future.

Where are original Samsung phones made?

There are misconceptions about "genuine" Samsung phones based on the country of manufacture, and the amount of misinformation on the internet certainly doesn't help. Simply put, all Samsung phones manufactured in the company's own factories or at its ODM partners are truly genuine. It doesn't matter if the factory is in South Korea or Brazil. A smartphone made in a factory in Vietnam is not inherently better than one made in Indonesia.

This is because these factories are really just assembling the devices. They all receive the same components and follow the same manufacturing and quality procedures. So you don't have to worry about whether your Samsung phone is genuine or not based on where it was manufactured. Unless it's an obvious fake that says "Samsang" or something similar on the back. But that is a completely different problem.
