Commercial message: An air cooler and a mobile air conditioner may look very similar at first glance. They resemble a large paper shredder. Although we primarily use both devices for the same purpose, that is to cool the air, they work very differently.

What is an air cooler?

People often mistakenly refer to it as an air conditioner, apparently for the same purpose of cooling the air. However, air coolers work differently. These are devices that combine a fan and a small air conditioner. Air coolers they are therefore fans that additionally have a cooling system thanks to a reservoir for cold water or ice.

How does an air cooler work?

Air enters the cooler with the help of a powerful fan that sucks in air from the back and blows out the cooled air from the front. The cooler is able to cool the air thanks to the cooling coil, through which the air flows and sucks the cold from the cold water or ice storage. Thanks to this process, the air temperature in the room will decrease.

An air cooler works on a different principle than an air conditioner. While the air conditioner actively removes heat from the room using the exhaust hose, air cooler lowers the temperature in the room by means of a fan and air humidification, thus providing a more pleasant environment in the room.

To maximize the effect of the air cooler, fill the reservoir with ice, cold water is less effective. The air cooler can reduce the temperature in the room by a maximum of 4 °C, which is a disadvantage compared to the result of a mobile air conditioner. However, the air cooler also has the function of humidifying the air in the room, which reduces the risk of catching a cold during the summer months.

benefits air coolers

  • no installation on the facade is required
  • there is no need for a hose that takes the warm air out of the room
  • is available at lower prices compared to air conditioning
  • it reaches a noise level of approx. 55 dB, which is less than the noise level of a mobile air conditioner, which is approx. 65 dB
  • low electricity consumption
  • thanks to its low weight (around 2 kg) the device can  easy to transport, so if you have cooled one room, you can simply move the cooler to another room

What is mobile air conditioning?

A mobile air conditioner is a cooling device that takes heat from the air and takes it out of the room. Air conditioning can cool the air even by dozens of degrees, however, the temperature difference between the outside temperature and the cooled interior of around 10 °C can cause you health problems. Experts advise that the temperature difference between outside and inside temperature should not exceed 6 °C.

How does mobile air conditioning work?

Mobile air conditioning is based on the air-to-air heat pump principle. The air conditioner takes warm air out of the room and brings cooled air into the room. There is an efficient motor compressor in the air conditioner, which is responsible for circulating and supplying pleasant cool air. The flexible hose takes the heat out of the air-conditioned room and leaves a pleasant coolness in the room.

Part of the warm air is removed to the outside, and since warm air is usually also moist, it condenses when it cools and condensate is formed. The water condensate is collected in a special tank or is discharged outside together with the warm air.

Mobile air conditioners serve to cool or heat the air in the interior and also dehumidify the air. As the name "mobile air conditioner" implies, this is a portable device that you can place even in hard-to-reach places where it would be a problem to install a wall-mounted air conditioner.

Advantages of mobile air conditioning

  • installation on the facade is not necessary (it is enough to ensure that the hose is drained out of the room through a window or a hole in the wall)
  • allows you to perfectly set and control the temperature in the room
  • it usually also has a heating function
  • compared to an electric direct heater, it costs up to 70% less
  • dehumidifies the air
  • easy to maintain
